How to Open a Locked PAN Card PDF Received from the Department

If you received a locked PAN card PDF from the Income Tax Department, Protean/NSDL, UTIITSL, or another official PAN service flow, do not panic. These files are usually protected so that only the applicant or authorised recipient can open them. The protection is normal, especially for e-PAN, PAN correction, allotment, and official communication PDFs.

Start with the message that came with the PDF

The safest first step is to read the email or SMS carefully. Many official emails mention the exact password format near the attachment line. If the message gives a format, use that format before trying anything else. Password formats can differ depending on whether the PAN belongs to an individual, company, firm, trust, or another entity.

Common password formats to try

For many individual PAN-related PDFs, the password is commonly based on the applicant's date of birth. Try DDMMYYYY, for example 05051996 for 5 May 1996. For a non-individual PAN, try the date of incorporation, formation, or registration in the same DDMMYYYY format if the email indicates date-based protection.

If the file is from a specific PAN service provider, also try the format mentioned in that provider's email. Do not add spaces, slashes, hyphens, or lowercase/uppercase changes unless the email specifically asks for them.

How to open it step by step

  1. Download the PDF from the official email only.
  2. Open it in a trusted PDF viewer such as Chrome, Preview, Adobe Reader, or Kaagaz.
  3. Enter the password exactly in the format mentioned in the email.
  4. If it opens, save a working copy in a secure folder.
  5. If you need to submit it to a portal that rejects locked PDFs, use the Unlock PDF tool only after confirming you are authorised to remove the password.

If the password does not work

  • Check whether you used the applicant DOB, not the download date or email date.
  • Use eight digits only for date-based formats.
  • Confirm the PAN application belongs to an individual or a non-individual entity.
  • Download the attachment again in case the first file was incomplete.
  • Verify PAN status on the official Income Tax portal if the details seem incorrect.

Privacy reminder

A PAN PDF contains sensitive identity information. Avoid uploading it to random websites. Use a secure workflow, remove the password only when necessary, and never share the unlocked copy over public links.

FAQ

Is every PAN PDF password DDMMYYYY?

No. DDMMYYYY is a common format for individual PAN-related PDFs, but the correct password is the one stated in the official email or instructions.

Can I remove the password permanently?

Yes, if you are the authorised holder or recipient and need an unlocked copy for a valid workflow. Keep the unlocked version private.

What should I do if I do not know the date of birth or incorporation?

Do not guess repeatedly. Ask the applicant or authorised account holder to confirm the details, or contact the official service channel that sent the document.
